Description
The Police Foundation is a multi-disciplinary think tank dedicated to work for police reform and the improvement of policing through research, capacity building and policy advocacy. The Foundation is driven by a coalition of progressive police professionals and citizen stakeholders who believe that positive transformation in the Indian Police is possible, through collective action by the police, citizenry, the State and Central Governments as well as the political leadership. The Foundation is governed by an eminent Board, whose members include serving and retired police officers, civil servants and thought leaders from civil society, academia, media, industry and the legal profession.
The world police system originated in ancient civilizations with organized security forces, evolved through community-based systems like England’s frankpledge, and developed into modern, state-sanctioned forces with the creation of London’s Metropolitan Police in 1829. Key milestones include the influence of British policing models on its colonies and the American adaptation of the British model in response to rapid urbanization in the 19th century. Modern policing is now defined by professionalism, with formalized training, specialization, and the use of scientific methods.
